There are 16 seats on the ARK Committee. All are volunteers and receive no remuneration. People who wish to join the Committee are required to become a member of ARK and to be registered as such on a central system. Members need to be either Turkish citizens or have Turkish residency permits. Elections for places on the Committee are held at meetings of ARK’s members, ie, the ‘General Assembly’. These must be held at least every three years, though ARK’s practice is to hold meetings of members more frequently, ie, ‘extraordinary meetings’.
The ARK Board of Directors is the body which is legally responsible for ARK’s affairs. The Board has five members, all of which are also members of the Committee. The roles of four of the Board members are determined nationally, ie, the roles of President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. The role of the fifth Board member can be determined by the dernek itself. In ARK it was decided that the fifth Board member would lead on ARK’s communications and media.
In addition to the five Board members, there is a legal requirement for there to be a Supervisory Board, ie, three members of the Committee whose role is to ensure that ARK operates in accordance with its stated purpose and that accounts and other reports are presented to ARK’s members. The ARK Board holds formal meetings at least monthly and the ARK Committee meets bi-monthly. In addition, there are a number of working groups to which Committee/Board members can belong, such as an Events Working Group and an Animal Shelter Group, in addition to groups engaging in specific projects, such as cat neutering and animal feeding.
Haybulans & the shelter
ARK Animal Rescue is dedicated to helping stray cats and dogs. Our work focuses on rescue, medical care, feeding, sterilisation, and improving the daily lives of animals living on the streets or in shelters. Haybulans, on the other hand, is a 24/7 emergency veterinary service that responds to urgent cases. If an animal is injured, sick, or in immediate danger, Haybulans provides fast medical assistance, stabilisation, and transport to veterinary clinics. For emergencies, call: 0090 444 7114 (English speaking option). Together, ARK and Haybulans ensure that animals in Kuşadası are protected, cared for, and given a chance at a better life, whether it’s daily care, rescue, or urgent medical attention.
HALO - Helping Animals Living Overseas
ARK Animal Rescue works closely together with HALO (Helping Animals Living Overseas), an international animal welfare organisation that helps rescue animals find safe and loving homes abroad. ARK focuses primarily on helping stray animals in Kuşadası, Turkey. HALO supports this work by helping many of these animals find permanent
homes outside Turkey, particularly in the United Kingdom and other countries. Through their experienced adoption network, HALO carefully matches rescued dogs and cats with suitable families.
While ARK rescues and cares for the animals locally, HALO manages and coordinates the international adoption process. HALO is managed by Corinne Oakes, who is also one of the Board Members of ARK Animal Rescue. This close collaboration helps ensure that rescued animals are supported both locally in Turkey and throughout the adoption process abroad. Together, this partnership allows us to give more animals a second chance at life, not only by improving their lives here in Kuşadası, but also by helping them find loving forever homes. If you are interested in adopting one of our animals, the adoption process is organised through HALO.
Constitution
In Turkey, derneks are non-profit organisations. They are a fundamental part of Turkish civil society and encompass a wide range of associations, including charities. Derneks are formal legal entities which are accountable to the Turkish Government. It is therefore a legal requirement to adhere to a very specific model of governance, in the interests of democracy, openness and accountability. See ‘Ark Board and Committee’.
Animal Rescue Kusadasi (ARK), is an association legally registered as Kusadasi Hayvan Kurtarma Derneği, registration number 09.021.148. In addition, there is a committee of volunteers, which meets regularly to plan and undertake practical actions to support the Association’s aims. The Association is open, transparent and accountable; decisions are made by consensus in a democratic manner.
Membership is open to all; the officers must be approved by the members and must be resident in Turkey, the president and accountant must be Turkish citizens. Members who are not officers may be committee members.
